Getting acquainted with my DLSR

For our assignment this week, we were tasked with simply taking some photos with our cameras and getting used to adjusting shutter speeds and apertures!
As opposed to taking all of my shots at once; I wanted to challenge myself to take photos in different conditions which I will discuss the challenges of below!

"I think I'm in love"
This was the first photograph I took with the DSLR, and those were my exact words. I had initially fiddled with shutter speed and aperture and beginner's luck was on my side and gifted me the perfect exposure. I used manual focus for this shot as I am quite familiar with it.
1/20 shutter speed at F16 aperture.

Vibrancy
For this shot I had the challenge of having too much light to work with. I had been sitting in the garden having my morning cup of tea when I noticed the sun was shining exclusively on the small flower patch by our front gate. I found this shot very difficult to get right because of the sheer amount of light I was working with. Having shortened the shutter speed 3 stops from 1/8 to 1/60 and closing the lens to F16 aperture I managed to get a super vibrant and crisp shot!

Bird-watching
This isn't an award-winning photograph by any means, but I love the contrast of the pebble-dash chimney against the midday blue sky. I found this one of the easier shots to take as the light source was behind the lens. Shot at 1/30 shutter speed at F16 aperture.

Looking to the Skies
I wanted the challenge myself a bit more with this shot. Using manual focus I focused on a close up subject with the light behind. After a bit of trial and error with different shutter speeds I managed to get the shot I was hoping for and feel I did pretty well to prevent any noise on the darker parts of the subject. Shot at 1/30 shutter speed at F11 aperture.

Neon Vibes
This shot probably took the most trial and error compared to any other. I had initially thought the brightness of the backlight would allow me to shoot at a faster shutter speed but I quickly found out after some very dark images I wasn't going to find much joy with that idea. Having opened up the lens and shortened the shutter speed I managed to get a pretty clean shot. Shot at 1/3 shutter speed at F4.5 aperture.

Midnight Glow
By far the hardest shot I've taken. The biggest issue here wasn't finding the correct shutter speed and aperture but actually holding the camera still while taking the image! I've heard patience is a requirement to be a photographer, who knew a reflection in a puddle would test mine so much. Shot at 2" shutter speed at F5.6 aperture.
